I've been running a HOB filter on my 20 gallon planted tank for about six months now. It's got a Betta, some Neon Tetras, and a few Corydoras. The water's been clear, but I'm wondering if I should upgrade to a canister filter for better filtration. What's your experience with HOB filters long term?

HOB filters can work well if you maintain them properly. I've used one on my 30 gallon for years with no issues. Just make sure you're cleaning the media monthly and not replacing it all at once. What's your current maintenance routine like?

Nah, HOBs are solid if you're not overstocking. I've got one on my 40 breeder with a bunch of Guppies and it's chill. Just gotta keep up with water changes and you're golden. What's your stocking like?

I agree with this. I've found that rinsing the media in tank water during water changes keeps the beneficial bacteria intact. How often are you doing water changes?

Thanks for the input, everyone. I do weekly 25% water changes and rinse the media in old tank water monthly. Sounds like I might be overthinking it.

Yep, you're good. HOBs are underrated. I've got one on my 55 with Angels and it's been running smooth for ages. Just don't skip maintenance and you'll be fine.

I switched from a HOB to a canister last year and honestly, the difference wasn't huge. The HOB was easier to clean, too. Unless you're planning to heavily stock the tank, I'd stick with what you've got.

HOBs are legit for most setups. I've got one on my 20 long with a pair of Rams and some Rummy Noses. No probs here. Just keep an eye on the flow rate if you're adding more fish.

Exactly. I've had similar success with my community tank. As long as you're not pushing the limits, a HOB is plenty.

I've only ever used HOBs. Never had a reason to switch. They're cheap, easy to find, and get the job done. Why fix what ain't broke?
