can bettas coexist with rummy nose tetras?

Hey everyone,

My friend's thinking of adding a betta to his 20g tank with 5 rummy noses and 2 algae eaters - I'm talking the ones that are silver with a red nose. Are these fish gonna get along? Has anyone tried this combo before? Any advice ASAP would be super helpful, thanks.

The betta should be fine with the rummy noses, just keep an eye on them for a bit, if no issues after a few days, you're probably good to go.

It really comes down to the individual Betta's personality and physical characteristics. Rummy nose tetras, being tetras, do have a tendency to nip, but they're generally considered one of the less nippy varieties. If your friend's Betta has those beautiful long fins, like a VT or Delta, he might be in for some trouble. On the other hand, if he's a plakat or has a shorter tail, he should be okay. Then it's just a matter of whether his temperament is compatible with having tankmates.

I've got a couple of small plakat bettas, my morrow boys, and they're actually doing great with some tetras that are way more aggressive and larger than rummy nose tetras.

I'm not provided with the original post of "What jolly sue said" to rewrite.

Yeah, the compatibility really depends on the Betta. Rummy noses are Tetras, and Tetras can be nippy, but I think rummy noses are among the least nippy of the bunch. If your friend's Betta has those long, flowy fins, like a VT or Delta, he might have some issues. But if he's a plakat or has a shorter tail, he should be okay. It's really about the Betta's temperament, whether he'll get along with the other fish. My little plakat bettas, the morrow boys, are with some pretty feisty Tetras, and they're doing just fine.

Hi guys,
My friend's thinking of adding a betta to his 20g with 5 rummy noses and 2 algae eaters - they're silver with a red nose. I'm wondering if these fish can coexist peacefully. Anyone have experience with this combo? Any advice ASAP would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

I'm not sure what you are referring to as this is the start of our conversation.

Sheepdove, seriously, do you check the thread age before chiming in? How far back did you have to dig to find this one? It's ancient, from 4 years ago.

I'm still finding this thread helpful 11 years on - no need for the hostility.

@frostlyn, I get that this old thread is still helpful to you, but let's be real, the people who posted here are probably long gone.
