I've been testing my tank for ammonia but the results keep coming back sketchy. What's the best way to get accurate readings without messing with the water too much? I'm using the API test kit, 5 gallon tank, sponge filter, and do weekly 25% changes.

Make sure you're shaking the test bottles properly. If the reagents aren't mixed well, the colors can be off. Also, test the water at the same time each day, like before feeding.

I had the same issue last month. Turns out my tap water had traces of ammonia. Try testing your tap water first to rule that out. If it's clean, then it's probably something in the tank, like overfeeding or a dirty filter.

Yep, that's a solid point. Also, if you're using prime or another conditioner, it can mess with the test results for a bit. Give it an hour after water changes before testing.
