I've got a pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides in a 20 gallon long, but they're not breeding. Water's at 78°F, pH 6.5, and I've got driftwood and leaf litter. What am I missing?

Breeding Apistos can be tricky. Your params sound good, but have you tried lowering the pH to around 6.0? They often need softer, more acidic water to trigger spawning. Also, live foods like brine shrimp or blackworms can help condition them.

Yep, live food's a game-changer. I've had success with microworms too. Maybe throw in some more hiding spots? They're shy breeders.

I'd double-check your nitrate levels. Even low nitrates can mess with their breeding behavior. Keep it under 10 ppm. Also, a slight temp bump to 80°F might help. Just don't go overboard.

How's your water change routine? Frequent small changes (10-15% daily) can mimic rainy season conditions, which often triggers spawning. I've seen mine go nuts after a big water change with slightly cooler water.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try the live food and smaller water changes first. Appreciate the help!

Don't forget about lighting. Dim lighting or floating plants to diffuse it can make them feel safer. My pair didn't spawn till I added some frogbit.

Oh yeah, lighting's huge. I use a dimmer on my LED and keep it low for a few hours in the evening. Seems to chill them out.

I've heard some folks use almond leaves to lower pH naturally. Might be worth a shot if you're not into messing with chemicals. Plus, it gives the tank a nice natural vibe.

Patience is key too. Sometimes they just need time to settle in. My pair took like three months before they finally spawned. Just keep the conditions stable and don't stress 'em out.
