What's the best way to set up a tank for a betta? I've got a 5-gallon with a sponge filter, but I'm not sure about the substrate or plants. Want to make sure they're comfy.

A 5-gallon is a good start. Use soft substrate like sand or smooth gravel to protect their fins. Live plants like java fern or anubias are great, they don't need much light. Keep the water at 78-80°F with a reliable heater.

Yep, reefwalker's got it right. Bettas love hiding spots, so throw in some driftwood or caves. Just make sure there's no sharp edges. And keep the flow low, they hate strong currents.

I'd skip the plastic plants, they can tear fins. Go for silk if you don't wanna deal with live ones. Also, bettas are jumpers, so a lid is a must. Lost one that way, learned the hard way.

How often should I do water changes in a 5-gallon? I've heard different things, from weekly to bi-weekly.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll go with sand and java fern. Any recommendations for a heater brand?

Weekly 20-30% changes are best for small tanks. Keeps nitrates in check without stressing the fish.

Eheim Jager heaters are solid, kingrise. Just make sure it's the right wattage for your tank size. And always use a thermometer to double-check the temp, heaters can be sketchy sometimes.

Don't forget to condition the water before adding it. Chlorine's a killer. I use Seachem Prime, works like a charm.

What about tankmates? Can I add anything else in a 5-gallon?
