I've seen DIY backgrounds for aquariums a few times and I'm interested in creating one for my 4-foot tank, specifically for my cichlids. I've got a rock theme in mind but using real rocks isn't an option due to the weight.

I was wondering what the best and most cost-effective method would be to achieve this. Additionally, does anyone have any tips on how to create realistic rock threads and textures?

Thanks for the link, really helpful. I'm in the UK, do you know where I can find polysterine like that? Also, any idea where I can get the cement mix from?

To be honest I'm not entirely sure, but I'd try somewhere like HobbyCraft or Baker Ross for the polysterine, they usually have a variety of craft supplies. Failing that, you could always check out DIY stores like B&Q or Homebase, they might have something suitable. If you've got a good local fish store, it could be worth asking them too.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, my 4ft tank's doing alright for the cichlids, but I want it to look the part too. You know, nice and clean.

Thanks for the tips, I'll have to do some shopping this weekend. Need to look into sealant as well, that's another thing to research. From the link, I've got a list going - Certain Cement, Sealant, and that Polysterine stuff. That's about it, I think. Knowing my luck, it'll still cost an arm and a leg, haha!
