Starting fresh with a tank

So I'm setting up a new 20-gallon tank and wanna do it right this time. Last one had algae issues, probably from too much light. What's the best way to balance lighting and plants without going overboard?

I'd start with low-light plants like Anubias or Java Fern. They don't need much, and you can keep the lights on for about 6-8 hours. What kind of substrate are you using?

Yep, Anubias is a solid choice. I've got some in my 15-gallon, and they're chill even with basic LED lights. Maybe throw in some floating plants to cut the light intensity if it gets sketchy.

I'd second the Anubias suggestion. Also, if you're using soil substrate, make sure it's capped with sand or gravel to avoid messing with the water params too much.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'm gonna go with sand substrate this time. Last one was plain gravel, and the plants struggled.

Sand's a good call. Just watch out for compaction. Stir it lightly during water changes to keep it from going anaerobic. How often are you planning to do water changes?

Agreed on the liquid tests. Strips can be hit or miss. What's your plan for filtration? Hang-on-back or canister?

Thinking hang-on-back for now. Heard canisters are better but kinda pricey. Any budget-friendly options you'd recommend?

Hang-on-backs work fine if you're not overstocking. I've got a simple AquaClear on mine, and it's been running smooth for years. Just clean the media monthly, and you're golden.

Yeah, AquaClear's a solid pick. Easy to maintain, and you can customize the media. Throw in some filter floss for mechanical filtration, and you're set.
