I'm new to keeping bettas and wanna set up my first tank. What's the bare minimum I need to get started? I've got a 5-gallon tank but not sure about filters or heaters.

For a 5-gallon, you'll need a low-flow filter since bettas hate strong currents. A sponge filter works great. Also, get a heater set to 78-80°F, they're tropical fish. Don't skip on water conditioner either, chlorine will mess them up.

Yep, and don't forget the substrate! Sand or small gravel is fine, just avoid sharp stuff. Also, throw in some live plants like java fern or anubias, they're low-maintenance and give your fish places to hide. Makes 'em feel safer, ya know?

I'd add that silk plants are a good alternative if you're not ready for live ones. Plastic can tear their fins.

Honestly, the biggest mistake beginners make is skipping the cycle. You gotta cycle that tank before adding your fish, or you're gonna have ammonia spikes. Use a liquid test kit, not strips, they're way more accurate.

How long does cycling usually take? I'm impatient, ngl.

It can take 4-6 weeks, but you can speed it up with bottled bacteria like Seachem Stability. Still gotta test the water though, no shortcuts there.

Also, keep the tank lid on tight. Bettas are jumpers, and you don't wanna find yours on the floor. Learned that the hard way.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Gonna start with the sponge filter and heater, then cycle the tank properly. Appreciate the help!

One more thing, avoid tankmates in a 5-gallon. Some folks try snails or shrimp, but it's sketchy. Bettas can be territorial, and a small tank just amps that up.
