Betta fish and tank setup costs

Just got my first betta and I'm trying to figure out the total cost for a proper setup. I've got a 5-gallon tank, but what else do I really need? Heater, filter, substrate, decorations, water conditioner… it's adding up quick. Anyone got a breakdown of essentials vs. extras?

Yeah, it can get pricey. I started with a 10-gallon, but honestly, a 5 is fine if you're tight on space. You'll def need a heater, especially if your room temp fluctuates. Filters are a must, but sponge filters are cheaper and gentler for their fins. Substrate's up to you, but sand's easier to clean than gravel.

Don't skip on the water conditioner, that's non-negotiable. And if you're gonna add live plants, you'll need a light too. But you can cut costs by skipping fancy decor and just using driftwood or rocks you find outside, just boil 'em first.

Agreed on the heater. I've seen too many bettas get stressed from cold water. A basic 50-watt should do for a 5-gallon. Also, don't forget a thermometer, they're cheap but super helpful.

How much did you all spend on your initial setup? I'm budgeting around $100 but not sure if that's enough.

Lol, $100 might cut it if you go barebones. My 5-gallon setup was like $150 with all the bells and whistles. But you can def save by shopping sales or used gear. Just avoid sketchy heaters, those things can fry your fish.

I'd prioritize heater and filter first. Decor can wait. Also, don't cheap out on food. Quality pellets are worth it.

Yeah, it's easy to go overboard. But honestly, your betta won't care if the decor's fancy. They just want clean, warm water and hiding spots.

For a 5-gallon, here's a rough breakdown: tank $20, heater $25, filter $15, substrate $10, conditioner $5, thermometer $3. That's $78 before decor or plants. Live plants can be cheap if you start with easy ones like anubias or java fern.

I agree with haply's numbers. You can also check local fish groups for used gear. Just make sure to clean everything really well before using it.
