General aquarium tips

Just got a new 20 gallon tank and wanna make sure I don't mess it up. Any tips for a beginner? Got a basic filter, heater, and some gravel. Planning to add plants soon.

First thing, cycle your tank before adding any fish. It's gonna take a few weeks, but it's worth it. Test your water regularly for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Also, don't overfeed, that's a common mistake.

Cycling is crucial. You can speed it up by using seeded filter media from an established tank if you have access to one. Also, consider adding live plants like Anubias or Java Fern—they help with water quality and look great.

Yep, cycling is key. I'd also recommend getting a liquid test kit, not strips. They're more accurate.

Don't rush it, dude. I made that mistake with my first tank and lost a bunch of fish. Patience is everything in this hobby. Also, keep an eye on your heater—sometimes they malfunction and cook your fish.

Plants are a game-changer. They soak up nitrates and give your fish places to hide. Just make sure you've got decent lighting, or they'll just die and mess with your water params.

If you're adding plants, get some root tabs or liquid fertilizer. They'll help 'em grow better. Also, avoid direct sunlight—it'll cause algae blooms like crazy.

I'd start with hardy fish like guppies or tetras. They're forgiving if your water isn't perfect right away. And yeah, plants are awesome, but don't go overboard if you're new to them.

Totally agree. And if you're gonna add fish, do it slowly. Don't dump a bunch in at once.

Keep it simple at first. Don't get fancy with CO2 or high-tech stuff until you've got the basics down. Focus on keeping the water clean and stable.
