I'm setting up a new 10 gallon for my betta and wanna add live plants. What's the best substrate and lighting combo? I've got a basic LED but not sure if it's enough for java fern and anubias.

For a 10 gallon, you'll want a nutrient-rich substrate like Fluval Stratum or ADA Aqua Soil. Java fern and anubias are low-light plants, so your basic LED should work if it's on for 6-8 hours daily. Just avoid direct sunlight to prevent algae.

I've had success with sand capped over dirt in my planted tanks. It's cheaper than commercial substrates and plants love it. Just make sure the dirt is organic with no additives. Anubias will thrive even in low tech setups.

Don't forget to cycle the tank before adding your fish! Plants help, but they're not a substitute for a proper cycle. I made that mistake once and my betta was not happy, lol.

If you're gonna use root tabs, stick 'em deep in the substrate near the plants. They'll give your java fern a boost even if the substrate isn't super rich. Also, floating plants like frogbit can help diffuse light.

How often should I trim the plants? My betta seems to like swimming through the leaves, but I don't want it to get too crowded.

Trim every 2-3 weeks, or whenever the plants block too much light. Bettas enjoy some cover, but they need open swimming space too.

I use Seachem Flourish for my plants. It's easy to dose and keeps everything green. Just don't overdo it, or you'll get algae.

Or just throw in some plastic plants and call it a day. Who's got time for all this maintenance, am I right? *laughs in lazy fishkeeper*

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try the sand and dirt combo with root tabs. Appreciate the help!
