Finding affordable aquarium products

I'm setting up a new 20 gallon planted tank and trying to keep costs low. Any recommendations for affordable but decent quality filters, heaters, and substrate? I've seen some sketchy reviews on Amazon, so I'm hesitant to just grab whatever's cheapest.

For filters, I've had good luck with the AquaClear series. They're reliable and easy to maintain. For heaters, the Aqueon Pro is a solid choice, though it's a bit pricier. Substrate-wise, pool filter sand is a great budget option if you're not going for planted-specific substrates.

I second the AquaClear recommendation. I've been using one for my 30 gallon for over a year with no issues. Just make sure to rinse the media well before using it to avoid cloudiness.

If you're looking for planted substrate, CaribSea Eco-Complete is affordable and works well. It's got all the nutrients your plants will need, so you won't have to add root tabs right away.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check out the AquaClear and Aqueon Pro. The pool filter sand sounds like a steal, but I might splurge a bit on the CaribSea for the plants.

You're welcome! Just remember to cycle your tank properly, especially with new substrate. It can take a bit longer to stabilize.

Another tip: check local fish clubs or forums for used equipment. I've scored some great deals on barely used gear that way.

That's a good point. Just make sure to test heaters before buying used. I've had a couple fail on me unexpectedly.

Also, if you're near a Petco, they often have dollar-per-gallon sales. It's a great way to save on tanks if you're planning to expand later.
