Betta fish and tank setup for health

What's the best tank setup for a betta to keep them healthy long-term? I've got a 5-gallon with a sponge filter, but my guy seems kinda lethargic. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Heater's set to 78. Not sure if I'm missing something.

A 5-gallon is decent, but bigger is always better if you can swing it. Sponge filters are great for bettas since they don't create strong currents. How often are you doing water changes? Even with good params, frequent changes help. Also, check if there's too much light or noise stressing him out.

Yo, my betta was the same way till I added some floating plants. They love the cover, makes 'em feel safe. Also, what's your feeding routine? Overfeeding can mess with their energy levels. I do pellets twice a day, just a couple at a time.

Floating plants are a solid suggestion. I'd also recommend checking the filter flow. Even sponge filters can be too strong if they're not adjusted right. Bettas prefer still or very gentle water movement.

I'm new to this, but my betta perked up when I added a little hiding spot. Just a small cave or something. Maybe yours needs more places to chill?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try adding some plants and tweaking the filter flow. Appreciate the help!

Had a similar issue. Turned out my betta was bored. Added a mirror for a few minutes a day, and he's way more active now. Just don't overdo it, or they'll stress.

What kind of substrate are you using? Darker substrates can make their colors pop and reduce stress. Also, how's the tank placement? Avoid high-traffic areas.

My betta was lethargic till I switched to live food. Now he's always on the move. Maybe try some brine shrimp or bloodworms?

Live food's a game-changer for sure. Just be careful with portion sizes. Too much can foul the water fast, especially in a smaller tank.
