best substrate for LPS corals

What's the best substrate for LPS corals? I've got a 40-gallon tank with a mix of Torch and Hammer corals, and I'm not sure if my current sand bed is cutting it. It's about 2 inches deep, but I've heard some folks swear by crushed coral or aragonite. Any tips?

I've had good luck with aragonite in my 55-gallon. It buffers the water nicely, and my Euphyllia seem to love it. Just make sure you've got enough flow to keep detritus from settling, or you'll end up with nutrient issues.

Aragonite's solid, but if you're gonna go that route, keep an eye on your alkalinity. It can spike if you're not careful. I've also seen folks use a mix of sand and crushed coral for a more natural look.

I'm still kinda new to this, but my LFS recommended CaribSea Arag-Alive. It's pricey, but my Duncan's been thriving since I switched. Not sure if it's the substrate or just luck, though.

That's a great choice! The live bacteria in Arag-Alive can really help with stability, especially for beginners. Just remember to rinse it well before adding to avoid cloudiness.

Honestly, I've messed with all kinds of substrates, and my LPS don't seem to care as long as the water's right. Save your cash and stick with what you've got if your params are stable.

I'm with streamer on this one. My Torches are chilling on plain old sand, and they're growing like weeds. Just keep up with your water changes, and you'll be golden.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll probably try a mix of aragonite and sand and see how it goes. Appreciate the help!

No problem! Let us know how it works out. I'm curious to hear if you notice any changes in growth or color.

One last thing—if you're mixing substrates, make sure you've got a good cleanup crew to keep things tidy. Nassarius snails are great for stirring up the sand bed.
