What Plants Work with Axolotls?

I'm setting up a 20-gallon tank for my axolotl and want to add some plants. What species can handle the cooler temps and lower light? I've heard Java Fern might work, but I'm not sure about others.

Java Fern is a solid choice, yeah. Anubias is another good one, it's tough as nails and doesn't need much light. Just make sure you attach it to driftwood or rocks, don't bury the rhizome or it'll rot.

I've had luck with Hornwort in my axolotl tank. It grows like crazy and gives them places to hide. Just be ready to trim it often, it can get out of hand real quick.

Moss balls are a fun option too. They're low maintenance and axolotls seem to like pushing them around. Plus, they help with water quality, which is always a bonus.

If you're looking for something carpeting, Dwarf Sagittaria can work. It's hardy and spreads well, even in cooler water. Just make sure your substrate is fine enough for the roots to take hold.

I'd avoid anything delicate or with sharp edges. Axolotls can be clumsy and might damage softer plants. Stick to the tougher species like the ones already mentioned.

What about floating plants? Would Frogbit or Water Lettuce work, or do they need warmer water?

Floating plants can work, but they might not thrive as well in cooler temps. They'd probably survive, but don't expect rapid growth like in a tropical tank.

I've seen some folks use Pothos with the roots in the water. It's not a true aquatic plant, but it can help with nitrates and looks cool hanging out of the tank.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I'll start with Java Fern and Anubias, maybe add some Hornwort later. Appreciate the help.
