Eating eggs

Just got my new discus out of QT and they've already paired off. Looks like they've laid eggs, but when I took a closer look, they started chomping down on them. Is this normal behavior or did I freak them out by checking on the eggs?

This isn't uncommon, especially with younger pairs. They might just need time to figure things out - some will get over eating eggs, others may not.

Re: Eating eggs
I'm thinking of moving them to a 20 gal breeder, but I'm not exactly set up for breeding - no RO system and all that. If they figure it out, great, but I'm not holding my breath. I think they laid the eggs a while back and only started eating them after I took a closer look, so maybe I did freak them out.

You can cover the eggs with a wire screen next time they spawn. Set up a breeder tank once the eggs are fertile.

Re: Eating eggs
I'm not thrilled about the aggression I'm seeing. The eggs are on a horizontal piece of driftwood, which doesn't exactly fill me with confidence about their fertility. And to make matters worse, I've noticed some body damage on my smallest fish.
