Keeping hoplo catfish with african cichlids?

Just got my new 420l 6ft tank up and running, and I'm keeping African cichlids. Got a mate who's got some hoplo catfish, and he reckons they'd do alright in with the Africans. Would they be compatible, or am I asking for trouble?
