Too many stocking options

I'm setting up a 40 gallon planted tank and can't decide on fish. Thinking about a school of Harlequin Rasboras, some Corydoras, and a centerpiece like a Gourami. Any thoughts on this combo? Water's at 78F, pH 7.2, and I've got a Fluval 307 running.

That combo sounds solid. Harlequins are chill, and Corydoras are always a good cleanup crew. Just make sure you get at least 6 of each for schooling behavior. The Gourami might get territorial, so watch for aggression.

I'd skip the Gourami if you're worried about aggression. A pair of German Blue Rams could work instead. They're colorful and less likely to mess with the others. Also, make sure your substrate is smooth for the Corydoras.

Why not add some Cherry Shrimp? They'd add color and help with algae. Just keep an eye on the Gourami, some might snack on them.

I've got a similar setup with Neon Tetras instead of Harlequins. They're tiny but super active. My Gourami ignores them, but yeah, shrimp might be risky. Maybe try a few and see how it goes?

Your water params are good for the species you mentioned. Just remember to acclimate them properly. A drip acclimation over an hour is best for sensitive fish like Corydoras.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll probably go with the Harlequins and Corydoras, then maybe hold off on the Gourami for now. Appreciate the heads-up on the shrimp too.

Yo, why not throw in a Betta? They're flashy and don't need much space. Just keep 'em solo if you go that route.

Bettas are a bad idea with other fish in a community tank. They're too aggressive, especially with flashy fish like Harlequins.

Agreed with joecruzo. Bettas are better off alone. Stick with the original plan, maybe add some Otocinclus for algae control if you're worried about cleanup.
