Re: can someone identify this object?

My wife had a betta with a similar issue, and we never quite figured out the cause. The white growth would appear, then vanish, only to return later. It was located at the base of the tail in our case, and I even examined it under a microscope, but found nothing conclusive. Despite the growth, the ...

I was thinking of him, but his name slipped my mind for a sec, sorry BadgersSong.

Re: Discovering the diversity of hillstream loaches (with pictures)

I've been keeping an eye on this thread, seems like there's still a lot to learn about these Hillstreams. I'm curious to see what others have to say about their experiences with them.

Re: Is my fish sick or just behaving strangely?

From the fish's viewpoint, that gap the Angel swam through might've seemed identical to other spots along the edge, thanks to the internal reflection off the glass - it could've looked like one continuous gap all along the contact zone. After bumping into the glass and the backing a few times, it ...

Java fern producing small brown offshoots: new plants or a cause for concern?

I'm inclined to think they resemble young Java ferns. They're located on the underside of the leaves, which is where spores typically develop and grow. The plant itself appears to be in good health, in my opinion.

Re: exploring the world's rarest aquarium fish

Honestly, I'm not big on specific tank brands, I just go with whatever works best for my setup.

It's possible our tank initially used putty, back when my father built large aquariums, he had a massive 45-gallon drum of tar for seating glass in fiberglass and steel frames. The 20-gallon tank I ...

Re: exploring the world's rarest aquarium fish

My rarest aquarium brand find is an old stainless/chrome frame tank that I had for over a decade - the kind held together with tar. Sadly, it got damaged during our last move, and I've been unable to track down a replacement frame since. Replacing the glass is relatively straightforward if you're ...

Re: choosing compatible tankmates for angelfish

I've had my fair share of raising angels, and one thing I've noticed is that their markings tend to stay relatively consistent as they mature. They might change a bit, but not drastically. The real challenge is predicting their adult size - I've had some angels grow quite large, while others remain ...

Re: the steel wool of the plant world

Oregon's got a problem with Marimo algae balls - they're a source of Zebra Mussels, an invasive species here in North America.

creating a raised tub for fish and furry pets

I've finished the raised tub for the laundry room, it's been a long time coming. My goal was to create a tub that's easy to work with while standing, no more straining my back. I can wash my 30-gallon tanks indoors where it's warm, clean off glass covers without them hanging over the kitchen sink ...
