Re: information about malawi
Tangs have a more understated beauty, their colours aren't as flashy but they're incredibly striking in their own way. I've got Brevis shellies that are supposed to be dull, but they've got these gorgeous purple and metallic green tones that shine under the right light. And my julies, they've got ...

Re: exploring tanganyika cichlids
I've had a pretty smooth ride with them, just keep an eye out for any fin nipping and make sure you're on top of those water changes - 20% every week works for me. Tangs do need their space, so it's no surprise their tanks are often understocked, this helps prevent nitrates from building up too ...

discovery of julie's eggs
I was observing my transcriptus julies a couple of nights ago and they seemed to be performing some sort of mating ritual in the rocks. Their movements around each other were really interesting - they were circling about an inch apart, one with its fins flared, the other bent in a S shape and ...

Re: color and lighting options for deep tanks
I've found a combination that works well for me, having a marine white tube at the back of the tank and a "colour" light, like an arcadia original tropical or juwel colorlite, at the front. This seems to bring out the colours of the fish, with the marine white providing a nice overall illumination ...

information on lamprologus ornatipinnis
Got a credit note at my LFS that's burning a hole in my pocket, and they've got some lovely Lamprologus Ornatipinnis shellies in stock. I'm thinking they'd be a great fit for my 29g tank - it's 30x12x18, so decent space for them to roam.

Thanks for the suggestions, really like the sound of the Lophiobagrus catfish, will definitely look into those further, might be just the thing for my 29g setup.

planning my tang tank setup
Just got my hands on another external filter, so I'm all set to set up my 29g again. The wife has given it the thumbs up, and I've found a nice quiet spot in the corner of our dining room. Initially, I thought of breeding my julidochromis transcriptus – they seem to have paired up in the big tank ...

Re: Keeping corys: what you need to know
If you're looking for alternatives to Synodontis, I'd recommend Syno petricola, lucipinnis, or multipunctatus. They're super social, do best in groups, and have that same playful vibe as corys - makes them a great substitute. They can be pricey, though.

Re: Cyphotilapia frontosa discussion
I'd agree with that, minimum 6 foot for fronts, 8 footer being the sweet spot.

Re: discussing julidochromis
I think Julies' small mouths make them seem harmless, but they can get really territorial and aggressive towards each other. With loads of rocks in there, I reckon you could keep 4 or 5 transcriptus or ornatus without too much trouble.
