Re: best discus tank vacation care

Aight, so no beef heart, got it. But what if my Discus are picky? They barely touch pellets. Tank's 90 gallons, planted, with a canister filter. I usually feed live blackworms. Gonna be gone for 12 days. Sketchy to leave 'em without live food, right?

Nah, they'll survive. Hunger's the best ...

Re: best discus tank filter media

Anyone tried those bio balls? Got a 50 gallon with 4 Discus and a HOB filter. Currently using sponges and ceramic, but the bio balls look neat. Tank's planted with Anubias, temp at 83F. Nitrates hover around 25 ppm with weekly 50% changes. Also, does media order matter in the filter?

Re: why discus swim near surface?

Y'all sleeping on the simplest answer. Sometimes they just like it up there! My big blue diamond hangs at the top every afternoon like clockwork. No issues, just vibes. But yeah, rule out the serious stuff first.

Re: Discus fry tank setup basics

I've heard some people use a quarantine tank before moving fry to the main tank. Is that necessary?

Re: Discus fry tank setup basics

I've seen some folks use a coffee filter to rinse the brine shrimp. Seems to work well for getting rid of the egg shells.

Re: Discus fry tank setup basics

I'm kinda new to this, but my fry love the powdered fry food from Hikari. It's easier than hatching brine shrimp every day. Anyone else use it?

Second this. Also, check if any tankmates are bullying 'em. Even small fish can be jerks sometimes.

Re: why discus stop eating pellets?

Mine did the same thing last month. Turns out they were just bored. I started mixing in frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp, now they're back to eating pellets too. Maybe yours just need some variety, ya know?

Adding a pop of red to the left of that tall middle plant could be just what it needs, I think it'd create a nice visual break from the wall of greens.
