Discus fry tank setup basics

Post by Blossom »

I'm setting up a new tank for my Discus fry and wanna make sure I don't mess it up. Got a 20-gallon with sponge filter, sand substrate, and a heater set to 84°F. How often should I do water changes, and what's the best food for them? They're about 2 weeks old.

For fry that young, daily water changes of at least 50% are crucial. They're super sensitive to water quality. Use a siphon to remove waste without disturbing the sand. For food, start with freshly hatched baby brine shrimp or a high-protein powdered fry food. Keep the temp steady, 84°F is perfect.

I've had success with microworms too, but brine shrimp are the gold standard. What's your water change routine like now? If you're not already doing daily changes, you might see slower growth.

Yeah, brine shrimp are the way to go. I've tried other foods, but nothing gets them growing like live baby brine. Just make sure you rinse them well before feeding.

Agree with mole on the water changes. Also, watch your TDS levels. Fry do better in softer water, so if your tap is hard, consider mixing with RO. What's your current TDS?

Yep, daily changes are non-negotiable. I slack off sometimes, and it shows in their growth. Brine shrimp are a game-changer.

I'm kinda new to this, but my fry love the powdered fry food from Hikari. It's easier than hatching brine shrimp every day. Anyone else use it?

Hikari's good, but live food still beats it for growth. If you're gonna use powdered, mix it with a bit of tank water to make a paste. Fry seem to take it better that way.

I've heard some folks use egg yolk as a fry food. Anyone tried that?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll start with daily water changes and baby brine shrimp. Gonna order a hatchery setup today.
