discus tank water clarity hacks

My discus tank water keeps getting cloudy after a few days, even with weekly 50% changes. Using a canister filter with sponge and bio media, tank is 75 gallons, temp at 84F, pH 6.8. Feed them frozen bloodworms twice a day. Any tips to keep it clear longer?

Re: discus fry tank water changes

Man, I never thought about aging water. Gonna try that. Also, if you're blending your own beef heart, add a little garlic guard. Makes it smell less gross and supposedly boosts appetite. My fry tank's got a weird vibe if I don't rinse the blender right after, though. Worth it for the growth spurts.

Re: discus fry tank water changes

I had the same issue last month. Turns out my heater was sketchy, temps were swinging between 82 and 86. Got a new one and they perked up. Maybe check your heater's consistency? Also, beef heart is great, but try adding some brine shrimp for variety. Mine went nuts for it.

Lights low? That's a new one. My tank's got LEDS on for 8 hours, maybe that's the issue. Also, what's your pH? Mine's at 6.8, soft water.

Re: why does my discus refuse to eat?

How old's the beef heart mix? Frozen food can go bad if it's been thawed and refrozen too much. Also, check for white stringy poop—could be internal parasites. If you see that, Metroplex in the food might help. What's your lighting schedule? Too much light can stress them out.

Re: why does my discus refuse to eat?

Mine did this once after I moved their tank. Took like a week to start eating again. Maybe they're just being dramatic? Dunno, fish are weird. You could try live blackworms, that usually gets mine going.

Re: Please help, planning a new discus tank.

Hi seaquake,

1. I'm planning to use an inline chlorine filter to handle the chlorine issue.
2. I agree with you, growing discus in a planted tank can be challenging, so I'm considering alternatives like an Angel fish tank.
3. I'm open to suggestions for ...

Please help, planning a new discus tank.

I've had a long break from discus - decades, in fact. Since then, I've had my fair share of other tanks - arowana, severum, African cichlids, and even a planted tank with small fish. But discus? Not for a long time. Now I'm planning to get back into it. Please, feel free to critique my plans:
