Re: A strange growth on my fin
I'd say it's likely excess mucous or a bit of fungus. For the fin rot, I've found that adding a couple of heaped tablespoons of rock salt to every 20 litres of tank water can help. Leave the salt in for 2 weeks and see how it goes. If you don't notice any improvement after a couple of days with the ...

Re: Keeping kuhli loaches with shell dwellers
The shell dwellers, being from Lake Tanganyika, thrive in water with a GH significantly higher, often above 350ppm, sometimes even nearing 450ppm, and a pH that's generally around 8.5. On the other hand, kuhli loaches originate from soft water environments with a GH that's notably lower, typically ...

Re: Cichlid behavior seems off, what could be the cause
I'd love to see a video of your fish in action. Typically, shell dweller cichlids live in family groups and get along pretty well with their relatives. It's usually during breeding or when unfamiliar fish enter their territory that things get a bit testy.

Re: opinions on ideal stocking levels
I think you've got a lot of fish in there. I'd be careful with those M. auratus, they can turn nasty when they grow up. Demasoni are already known for being feisty, so I'm not surprised you're thinking of rehoming some. With that many fish, you'll need to keep a close eye on water quality and make ...

Re: opinions on ideal stocking levels
Young Mbuna can get along just fine when they're still small. However, things tend to change once they've matured and start breeding - that's usually when the territorial disputes kick in.

Re: My anemone aquarium setup
If you're setting up a new tank for anemones, it's best to use clean seawater - don't use old water from another tank.
Mixing different species of clownfish is a bad idea, they'll fight and kill each other.
You can keep multiple anemones in the same tank, but they'll fight if they touch. So ...

Re: Is a ph level of 7.6 suitable for keeping farm-raised african cichlids?
Changes in water hardness, or GH, aren't as stressful for the fish as pH fluctuations, but they still have an impact. To minimize stress, it's best to adjust the GH over a period of time, such as a couple of weeks. A good approach is to do regular, small water changes - about 10-20% - using water ...

Re: Is a ph level of 7.6 suitable for keeping farm-raised african cichlids?
For locally bred cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria, a pH of 7.6 should be fine, but you'll need to ensure your water has a GH above 200ppm.
On the other hand, if you're looking at locally bred cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, they typically require a slightly higher pH, above 8.0, and a GH ...
