Is this a demasoni cichlid?

Post by duskhunt »

I'm having some trouble figuring out the ID of one of my fish - I've always assumed it was a demasoni, but after browsing more pics, I'm not so sure anymore. If it is a demasoni, I was thinking of converting my 50-gallon tank to a demasoni-only setup.

Here's a pic for reference - sorry about the quality, this fish is always on the move!

I'd love to get a better look at your fish. Any chance you can snap a clearer pic, maybe when it's not swimming around so much? Are there any other colors, like on its chin, tail, or belly, that might help with the ID? From what I can see, it does look like a Demasoni, but I'd like to be sure.

yeah I'm pretty sure it's a demasoni, the shape and colors match, but I've been second guessing myself lately.

I'm not convinced it's a Demasoni, the bar pattern seems off. Demasoni typically have four bars under the dorsal, and this one appears to have more. It's possible it's a "Midnight" Demasoni, but even that's a stretch - it could be a different Pseudotropheus sp. altogether, maybe from the Mozambique population.
