Discovering new plants

Post by brayk »

Just got a couple new plants from Petco, kinda nervous about introducing them to my tank. Is there a way to quarantine or give them a good cleaning before adding them in?

Most people just give them a good rinse under tap water and check for snails or snail eggs - those clear jelly blobs on the leaves or stems. You can also put them in a bucket of tap water for a few weeks, just make sure they get some light. If you're really worried, you can try a cold water and bleach dip - 1-2 minutes should do it. Then, rinse them under tap water and put them in a new bucket of tap water with a bunch of dechlorinator - 4 times the recommended dose. Let it sit for a couple of hours, then rinse them a few more times before adding them to your tank.
