Adding anubias nana to a tetra tank: a good idea?

Post by oldraider »

I swapped out some of my Java Ferns for anubias nana. The Java fern leaves had started browning and growing seedlings, so I figured it was time for a change. I replaced them on my tree stumps with anubias nana - what do you think? The first pic is from before I added the anubias, when I only had a small amount in the tank.

The anubias nana really brings a nice touch to your tree stumps. I think it's a great choice, especially since the Java Ferns were starting to decline. Your tank looks fantastic, by the way.

I appreciate the feedback, gripit. The LFS gave me a great deal on the anubias nana, so I couldn't pass it up. Had to fight some black beard algae initially, but it was worth it since I only had a few small pieces before this larger batch.

Your anubias nana looks amazing. I've had the same type for 3 months now, and I'm really impressed with the growth. The broad leaves and dark green color are definitely my favorite features.

I really like the change. Java ferns can be great, but they tend to spread quickly and before you know it, you've got more than enough. Adding some variety with different plants is always a good idea, and your anubias nana looks fantastic - the contrast is a nice touch.

The anubias nana seems to be thriving in my 58L tank, it's definitely outperforming the other plants. Haven't added any to the new tank just yet, but that's likely to change soon.

I've got a bunch of new seedlings forming on the ferns, considering relocating many to another tank once I add more anubias. I cut one anubias in half, and I've got another that I can divide into 3-4 parts. That one's recovering from black beard algae treatment, so I'll wait till its leaves are fully healed before dividing it up.

Hi RV, hope you and the family are doing well. I missed your update on adding the Anubias and I must say, it's looking really nice. I think you've made a good choice and it's definitely transformed your stumps. The tank looks great.

I'm considering adding some anubias to my 55g. I was wondering, how did you attach yours to the stumps? I'd love to hear about your experience.

We're all doing alright, my wife is recovering well from her knee operation. I'll have to update the tank pics soon. I got the anubias in small pots from Petco and just added them straight to the tank. For attaching them to the stumps, I mostly stuck them through openings or in cracks. Thought about using super glue, but they seem to hold pretty well on their own. Occasionally I find one loose and floating, but some of the anubias have already grown roots onto the stumps. I also added a few more small pieces of driftwood to the tank.

Glad to hear that attaching them without super glue is working out for you. I was thinking of using it but I'm glad I didn't, especially since it can be a real pain to remove if needed. I've found that just wedging them through the nooks and crannies of the stumps works pretty well, and after a while, they start to take root.

Great to hear that your wife is recovering well from her knee operation, and I'll definitely try to get some more pictures up soon. I've made a few changes to the tank since the last update, including adding some more driftwood, so it'll be nice to share those with you.

Take care, and I'll catch up with you soon.
