Amazon frogbit and alternative options

Post by Lexat »

For Zorchzon Frogbit, I'm having a bit of trouble finding a reliable online supplier in the UK - does anyone have a recommendation? On a separate note, I'm in need of some advice; I'm pretty new to floating plants. Given my setup, what are my options?

I suppose playing it safe with some Elodea Densa and just letting them float is an option.

Tank specs: 110 L, pH 7.4, KH 4, GH 5 (German degrees), 75 degrees temp. I'm using TNC lite (liquid) for ferts.

Current stock: bronze corydoras, white fin bentosi tetra, golden ancistrus.

Other plants in the tank: crinum thakento4um, rooted Elodea Densa, and willow moss.

Floating plants are brilliant for grabbing ammonia and providing shade. I'm quite fond of Water Sprite, it's a top choice for me. Water Lettuce is another great option, and of course, Frogbit is a given. If you're in the UK, you might be able to get some from a local supplier - does anyone have any recommendations? I've also had success with Pennywort, it grows nicely when floating, but it's less effective than the others since it's not as dense.

I'd recommend Water Sprite for its ammonia-grabbing and shading abilities, it's worked well for me. Another option is Water Lettuce, or the obvious choice, Frogbit. They'll all do the job. I've also had success with Pennywort as a floating stem plant, though it's less dense so not as effective.

I've got a mix of plants in my tank, but I think I only mentioned Water Sprite and Pennywort here, didn't I?

I've struggled to keep fully aquatic plants thriving, so I've taken to using pothos and philodendron to help cleanse the water of toxins.

I've found a decent online supplier for floating plants - Aqua Essentials seems to have a good selection. I've ordered from them before and the quality's been fine. Their floating plants might be worth checking out for your setup.

I've had a good experience with Aqua Essentials, they have a nice selection of floating plants and the quality seems top-notch. I've personally bought from them before and had no issues.

I've got both Frogbit and Elodea Densa in my tank, and I'm pretty pleased with them. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure where I sourced them from - possibly Pro Shrimp, but don't quote me on that. My Frogbit's been growing at a pretty slow pace, but it's been shooting out some decent roots. One thing I do like about the Elodea is that it doesn't just stick to the surface; I find it scattered throughout the water column, which adds a bit of visual interest.

Thanks for the tip, really appreciate it. I think having some Elodea floating around will be perfect for my White Fin Bentosi Tetras. It's always available and pretty affordable too, which is a bonus.

That's an old photo from another thread, I'm guessing. I can't enlarge it, but it appears to be Water Lettuce floating. The tall plants look like swords, probably Echinodorus griesbachii bleherae. The small plants covering the substrate like a carpet are likely pygmy chain swords, specifically Helanthium tenellum.
