plant infested with worms

Post by florapix »

I got a Foxtail plant about a month ago and it was doing terrible - completely brown and dead. So I put it in a jar with some fertilizer and water, and left it outside to get lots of sunlight. I think the lid must've fallen off for a few days, but I put it back on. Anyway, I checked on it and it's actually doing way better now. But when I looked in the water, I saw a ton of mosquito larvae and these worms. I got rid of the mosquito larvae, but these worms just won't leave. What can I do to get rid of them before I put the plant back in my tank?

I'd advise against putting the plant back in your tank with those unknown worms. They could pose a risk to your fish. Foxtail plants aren't typically suited for underwater environments - I think they're marsh plants, if I recall correctly. This can cause problems in a fish tank, too.

A small terrarium could work, keeps it out of the tank and gives the Foxtail a better environment to thrive.

I think a terrarium could be a great option for the Foxtail plant. It would probably look really cool and it seems like it would thrive in that environment.

Sounds like a solid plan, good luck with the terrarium.

Those worms resemble caddis fly or midge larvae. They're generally harmless to adult fish, but might pose a threat to baby fish if they can catch them.

I've got some small molly fry in my tank, so a terrarium sounds like the way to go with this plant.
