Choosing plants for a small gravel bottom tank

Post by amero »

I've got an Anubius Lynxa tied to a rock in my 10G tank, but I'm looking for some other ideas to add. Still in fishless cycle, so no fish just yet. Here's a pic of my setup so far. I'm working with a gravel bottom, so any suggestions would be great.

I've had a lot of luck with my 10-gallon gravel tank, I've got amazon sword plants that are thriving and my cryptocorns are doing great too. I also have a couple of anubias nana plants, same as you, but I've got them planted in the gravel. The key to keeping them alive is to only bury the roots, not the thick green stem, that way they can breathe and absorb the nutrients they need. I've also had a lot of success with moss balls, they're super low maintenance and look awesome in the tank.

Old thread, but I'll chime in. I've got a 10G gravel tank too and I'm in the middle of a fishless cycle. I've got an Anubius on a rock, just like you amero, but I'm thinking of adding some other plants. breezy, those amazon swords and cryptocorns sound like a great idea, I'll def look into those. And yeah, I've heard about the anubias thing, only bury the roots, not the stem, got it. What about some java moss or a moss wall? Any thoughts on those?

Just a heads up, having less gravel would make maintenance a whole lot easier. You don't need it to be any higher than the frame at the bottom - that's just more room for uneaten food and organic waste to get trapped and sink.
