Dealing with excess anacharis: solutions and advice

Post by kingrise »

I'm finally tackling that 29g tank today - the Anacharis is getting a serious haircut. I've been putting this off for way too long. So, I've got a ton of trimmings to deal with now. Anyone have any ideas what I can do with all this stuff? Already checked with my LFS, but they're not interested.

Just got done with the massive trim - over a gallon's worth of Anacharis is now out of my tank. I mean, I literally had to cram it into a gallon ice cream carton, and it's packed to the brim. I'm really hoping someone can help me figure out what to do with all these trimmings - I've got a lot to get rid of.

You can post it on a local aquarium group on Facebook or something and see if anyone's interested in buying some Anacharis.

I don't have Facebook, so that option's out for me. I get what you're saying, though - selling them is a good idea. However, I need a more immediate solution. I don't have a spare tank to hold them, as all my other tanks are occupied with fish. What can I do with the trimmings in the meantime?

Update: Just finished scrubbing the sand and yanked out a bunch of plants. Got a mystery on my hands though - something's been munching on my greens! Java Fern's gone and a lot of Anacharis got devoured too. @boomer, @coltin, any ideas what's behind the plant massacre?

Next up, filter cleaning... haven't done it in ages, so this should be fun.

If you can't find anyone to take your Anacharis trimmings, consider using them in your garden - they're organic and can act as a natural fertilizer. You can bury them under some soil, and they'll likely help with plant growth.

I was thinking of keeping it alive too, but I guess that's not an option now. I've also got a surplus of Slavinia - might as well bury them alongside the Anacharis then.

If you're lucky enough to have another tank, just toss it in there. Otherwise, grab a clear vase, fill it up with water, and stick it in your window. That way, it'll stay alive until you can find someone to take it off your hands.

I'm seriously overwhelmed with Anacharis right now - all my tanks are maxed out with it. I've got a massive amount, we're talking over 100 individual stems, and they're all different lengths, ranging from a decent 7 inches to a whopping 24+ inches.

You could put the trimmings in a vase with water and stick it in a window, I've got a bunch of vases just collecting dust.
