Identifying a couple of corals

Post by jenniva »

Got these a while back, but I'm still trying to figure out the exact names. I'm pretty sure the first one is some kind of chalice, possibly a Hollywood Stunner. The second one I think is a type of Favia, but I'm stumped on the third one - the flintix9t one, I mean. Any insight would be a huge help. Sorry again for the poor pics, I'm dealing with some GHA issues right now. Thanks.

I think number 3 resembles a Turbinaria, specifically reniformis. The first one appears to be a Mycedium chalice, rather than a Hollywood stunner. As for the second, I've seen it labeled as Area 51 Favia before.

If that purple coloration expands on the second one, it might resemble a variant of the dragon soul, adding a unique twist to the Area 51 Favia rustyfox9 mentioned.

Here we go,

Initially I was thinking cyphastrea on the first one, but then I took a closer look and I'm pretty confident it's not that. The capping growth is what really gives it away for me.

1. I'm going with Stunner Chalice on the first one, seems like the most likely candidate.
2. Number two looks like Goniastrea to me, but I could be wrong.
3. And I agree with rustyfox9, number three does look like Turbinaria.

I'm no expert, but from what I've learned, the so-called 'dragon soul favia' - isn't actually a favia, right? More like a goniastrea, if I'm not mistaken.

The first one is indeed a Hollywood Stunner Chalice. I'm not too familiar with Favia, but I think the second one is just a regular type of Favia - not sure of the exact ID though. As for the third, I believe it's a Turbinaria reniformis, not LA Lakers Scroll Coral - that's a pretty cool coral, by the way. It looks great in a sps tank, gets a nice purple color with bright yellow polyps. Good score on that one. I'd suggest taking it off the sand and putting it on a rock, it'll thrive there.
