Fungia survival chances after damage

Post by Korvix »

Just got my new fungia from Divers Den and I'm a bit concerned. It's been 5 years since I last had one, so I'm not sure if this is normal. The skeleton's pretty exposed, which makes me think it might be stressed from shipping. Does anyone know if they usually close up this much during transport?

It's a gamble, but even if it doesn't make it, try keeping it in a low-light area. Sometimes they can repopulate the disc with tiny fungia, it's happened before. Check out this thread for some info on it: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showt ... ?t=1031776

I've never seen a fungia like yours before - the color and shape are unique. I'm not sure if the darker areas are exposed skeleton or not, but it looks like a newly introduced coral that hasn't fully acclimated yet. The ones I'm familiar with have white skeletons, which I don't see in your picture. It's normal for the tentacles to retract, and you can see the ridges of the skeleton, as long as the colored tissue is tightly covering it. That's my experience, at least. If the tissue is flaking off, that's a problem - but I don't see any obvious signs of distress in your pic. Give it a few days, see if it responds to food. If you're still worried, email Divers Den - they should take care of you.

I've gotta disagree, I think that fungia's in trouble, low light and low flow might be its only hope. Not even sure a dip would be a good idea at this point, opinions? Either way, DD's got a good rep, they'll likely make it right if it doesn't pull through.

I'm not seeing the same death signs others are, just a deflated Fungia, which isn't uncommon. No white skeleton in sight, which is a good sign to me. Picture's not the best, but I'm not getting the same vibe as some others - what am I missing here?

OP, how's it doing now?

It's actually doing alright, surprisingly. Not puffy like I'm used to with fungias, but looks healthy. Will try to grab another pic later today to share.

Sometimes corals just decline without any obvious reason, but I don't think that's the case with yours yet, especially since you said it's doing well. Eating habits are a good indicator - is it taking in food? If it is, that's a positive sign.

I'm not seeing any dinos in that picture, but I am curious, are you experiencing any algae issues in your tank? I've had fungias before and they can be sensitive to water quality. What's your experience been with this one, is it eating?
