Raising kenyi mbunas: when to separate the fry from the mother

Post by cosmosky »

I've got a Kenyi Mbuna with free swimming fry in a fry tank. They're swimming around but still darting in and out of mom's mouth. Should I move her back to the main tank now or give her a few more days to rest and be with the babies?

Never kept Kenyi Mbuna myself, just thought I'd add to the discussion. Instinct tells me to let her be with the fry, especially in the first week - she's still recovering after all.

It's best to keep them together for now, as the babies still seem to be relying on the mother for safety. Give her a bit more time to care for them and recover from spawning - once they stop seeking refuge with her, you can consider moving her back to the regular tank.
