Is 100% ro/di water thoughts?

Post by ailam »

I'm planning on upgrading to a bigger tank setup and I'm looking for a more cost-effective way to source water for water changes. Right now, I'm buying water, but I'll need something cheaper soon. I'm considering getting an RO/DI system because I like the idea of having more stable TDS levels, rather than relying on well water. Has anyone here used 100% RO/DI water in their tank? Or do you think it's better to use RO/DI with mineral supplements? I'd love to hear about your experiences with RO/DI.

Honestly, I'm not sure if RO is necessary for my situation either, but I'm considering it since I'm planning on upgrading to a bigger tank. I've been using purchased water for water changes, and I'm looking for a more cost-effective solution. I've heard mixed opinions about using 100% RO/DI water, and I'm curious to know if it's better to use it with mineral supplements or not.

I'm thinking of getting a new water source for my future tank setup to cut costs in the long run. Right now, I'm considering using well water, but the TDS can be all over the place - it's been as high as 600 ppm and as low as 200 ppm, depending on the weather. I'm worried about the inconsistency. Would using RO water with mineral supplements be a good alternative? I already give my fish Seachem Nourish Vit as part of their daily diet, so I'm hoping that adding minerals to the RO water would be enough.

I think the question here is, how would altering the water chemistry specifically benefit your fish. Many of us successfully keep discus in well water, and it's worth noting that there's no one-size-fits-all 'magic' water chemistry for raising high-quality fish. It really comes down to regular water changes with clean water.

Discus in their natural Amazon habitat thrive in water with minimal minerals, getting what they need from their diet instead. To understand whether switching to R/O or R/O with mineral supplements would be beneficial, you need to assess how your discus are doing on their current water. Otherwise, it's tough to define what benefits you might see from making a change.

Thanks for the input Liz and wilde. I actually never tried raising my discus with tap or well water, so I'm not sure how they'd do in that setup. The water I buy has some sort of filtration system - it's meant for drinking, but I've been using it for my tank.

I'm planning to visit a water filtration company today to see if they can set up something similar at my place. As for my discus' development in my current water, I think they've been doing great.

I switched to Seachem Nourish a while back, and I've seen improvements since then. I used to do 30% water changes daily, but now I do 100% every 2-3 days and the results are better.

I've been looking into the first picture you posted, and I think those green color filters can be installed by a company like Culligan Water. They offer both rental and purchase options, and if you rent, they'll handle maintenance for you. I've also seen similar setups at some local pet stores.

Thanks for the info Cliff, I'll look into it and compare all options.
