Got two empty tanks, a 36gal and a 55gal, thinking of setting up a cichlid tank. Always been a fan of convicts, so I'm wondering what's the max I can keep in each tank. Just want a single-species tank, so no mixing with other types.
Read that males can be pretty aggressive, so I'm prepared for the possibility of just keeping a pair. Don't mind if that's the case, actually. Planning to set up the tank with plenty of hidey-holes and rock caves, and some hardy live plants to round it out.

Going with a pair sounds like the way to go. When they spawn, they'll be super protective of their young and chase off anything that gets too close.

I'd go with a breeding pair, they're quite aggressive. That way you'll get to see them in their full glory, guarding their young and all. Someone please move this to the New World Cichlids section, thanks!
