PetSmart 5-gallon tank
PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Thinking about getting the PetSmart 5-gallon tank for a Betta. Anyone have experience with it? Worried about the filter being too strong.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
I've used that tank before. The filter flow is adjustable, so you can tone it down for a Betta. Just make sure to cycle it properly before adding fish. Also, the included light is decent for low-light plants like Anubias.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Yep, got one last month. The filter's chill once you tweak it. My Betta digs the space, but the heater's kinda sketchy. Had to swap it for a better one.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Agreed. The cycling part's crucial. I'd recommend adding some Seachem Stability to speed it up. The tank's compact but works well for a single Betta.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
The PetSmart 5-gallon's a solid starter tank, but the heater's garbage. Swap it for an adjustable one ASAP. Also, throw in some Java Fern or Moss Balls to give your Betta hiding spots.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna grab the tank and a better heater. Any recommendations for a heater brand?
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Eheim Jager's reliable for small tanks. Set it to 78-80°F for a Betta. Also, if you're planting, go for a nutrient-rich substrate like Fluval Stratum. It's pricier but worth it.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
I'm using a Tetra HT10 in mine. Works fine, but keep an eye on the temp. Bettas are picky about that. Oh, and don't forget a lid. They're jumpers.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Second the lid advice. Lost a Betta once that way. Heartbreaking. Also, if you're using tap water, condition it with Seachem Prime. Removes chlorine and detoxifies ammonia.
Re: PetSmart 5-gallon tank
Aqueon Pro's another good heater option. Just avoid the preset ones. Bettas need stability, and those things can swing temps. Also, toss in some Indian Almond Leaves for tannins. Helps 'em chill.
