Root tabs and liquid fertilizer combo?

Post by steven45 »

I've been using root tabs for my Amazon Swords but they're still looking kinda weak. Would adding liquid fertilizer help, or is that overkill? My tank's a 40 gallon with moderate lighting, CO2 injection, and weekly water changes.

Yo, def not overkill! Root tabs are great for heavy root feeders like Swords, but liquid ferts cover the rest. I run both in my 55g and my plants are popping. Just watch for algae if you go heavy on the liquid stuff.

Root tabs provide macronutrients like iron and potassium directly to the roots, while liquid fertilizers are better for column feeders. A balanced approach is ideal. What's your current dosing schedule for the root tabs?

I had the same issue with my Swords. Added Seachem Flourish alongside the root tabs and saw improvement in about two weeks. Just make sure your lighting and CO2 are consistent.

Totally agree! I use Thrive liquid ferts with root tabs and my tank's never been happier. Just start slow with the liquid dose.

What's your substrate? If it's inert like sand or gravel, root tabs are a must. Liquid ferts are more for the water column. I'd say combo is the way to go, especially with CO2.

I'm in the same boat, dude. My Swords were struggling until I doubled up on root tabs and added a lil liquid fert. Now they're growing like crazy. Just don't go overboard or you'll be fighting algae for weeks.

I'm new to this, but my friend told me to use both. My plants seem to like it so far. How often should I replace the root tabs?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try adding liquid fertilizer and see how it goes. My substrate is gravel, so I'll stick with the root tabs too.

Root tabs typically last 3-4 months depending on the brand. For liquid ferts, follow the bottle instructions but adjust based on plant growth and algae. Less is more at first.
