keeping pseudotropheus demasoni cichlids
im thinking of getting 10 Pseudotropheus demasoni cichlids, does anyone have any advice on male to female ratio? would be great to get some tips
Re: keeping pseudotropheus demasoni cichlids
I'd go with the general consensus, 1 male to 3 females is the way to go. The males really need those females around to bring out their full colour.
Re: keeping pseudotropheus demasoni cichlids
I'd advise against the 1 male to 3 female ratio for demasoni. To be honest, it's not the best approach for these fish. What you really want is a larger group of at least 10-12, with only one or possibly two males if you've got the tank space. The thing is, demasoni can be pretty brutal to each other, so having a bigger group helps to distribute the aggression.

I've had no issues keeping 2 groups of trios, so I'm not convinced big groups are always necessary. What are your plans, are you going to keep other Malawis with them or have a species-specific tank? And what size tank are you planning on using, by the way? Oh, and just a heads up, I'm actually just up the road in Maidstone, and I've got some Demasoni fry growing out at the moment.

I'm setting up a species tank, just for the Pseudotropheus demasoni cichlids, and the tank's 3ft, about 130 litres. Got 10 on order, due to arrive after Christmas.
