Also, if you're still having issues, try a smaller diameter hose. Less water volume to move means easier suction. Just gotta go slower.

True that. My buddy runs a skinny hose on his sand tank, says it's way easier to control.

Another thing, make sure your tank water level is higher than the bucket. Physics, man. The bigger the height difference, the stronger the siphon.
