best filter for a discus aquarium

Post by Foldo »

Setting up a 75 gallon tank for Discus and need advice on filters. I've heard canisters are best, but which model handles their bio load without too much flow? Tank has sand substrate, driftwood, and a few live plants. Water changes weekly, 50%, temp at 84F. Currently eyeing the Fluval 407 but open to suggestions.

I've been running a Fluval 407 on my 90 gallon Discus tank for a year now, and it's been solid. The flow is adjustable, so you can dial it down if they seem stressed. Just make sure to stuff it with extra bio media, like Seachem Matrix, to handle their waste. My crew's chill with it, no weird vibes.

Yo, skip the canister mess if you ain't tryna clean it every month. Get a sump, bruh. Way more room for media, easier maintenance, and you can hide heaters and other junk in there. My 75 gallon sump's got filter socks, bio balls, and a protein skimmer. Discus been thriving, no cap.

I've had good luck with the Eheim Classic 600. It's quiet, reliable, and the flow isn't too strong for Discus. I use it on my 75 gallon with a sponge pre-filter to catch debris before it hits the canister. Tank's got driftwood, java fern, and a group of 6 Discus. Water changes every 5 days, 30%.

Sump's overkill unless you're running a monster tank. Stick with a canister. I've got a SunSun HW-304B on my 75 gallon, and it's been running smooth for 2 years. Cheap, easy to maintain, and handles the bio load fine. Just add extra ceramic rings. My Discus are healthy, no issues.

Nah, sumps are sketchy if you ain't got the space. Canisters are plug-and-play. I run a Fluval FX4 on my 100 gallon, and it's a beast. Handles 10 Discus, tons of plants, and a school of tetras. Just gotta clean it every 6 weeks.

I'm new to Discus but my LFS recommended the Oase Biomaster Thermo 600. It's got a built-in heater, which saves space, and the pre-filter is super easy to clean. My 60 gallon's got sand, some anubias, and 5 young Discus. Water changes twice a week, 25%. So far, so good.

For a 75 gallon, I'd go with the Fluval 407 or Eheim Classic. Both are proven, and the flow can be adjusted. Just make sure you're doing regular water changes, no matter what filter you pick. My Discus are in a 90 gallon with a 407, and I do 50% changes weekly. They're growing fast, no health issues.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Leaning toward the Fluval 407 with extra bio media. Appreciate the real-world experiences.

Good call, Foldo. Just remember to rinse the media in tank water during changes, not tap. Chlorine'll wreck your bacteria. My Discus started coloring up nicely after I switched to that routine.
