Managing MTS population growth
Managing MTS population growth
My Malaysian Trumpet Snails are breeding like crazy. I've got a 20 gallon planted tank with sand substrate, and they're everywhere. How do y'all keep their numbers in check without harming the plants or other tankmates?
Re: Managing MTS population growth
I had the same issue in my 30 gallon. Reducing feeding helped a lot. They thrive on excess food, so I cut back to once a day and vacuum the substrate weekly. Also, adding Assassin Snails can help control them naturally.
Re: Managing MTS population growth
Yep, overfeeding's the main culprit. I switched to sinking pellets instead of flakes, so less food hits the substrate. Also, manual removal with a snail trap works if you're consistent. Got a DIY one with a soda bottle and lettuce.

That's a solid plan. I'd add that lowering the temp a bit can slow their reproduction. Mine chilled out when I dropped from 78°F to 74°F.
Re: Managing MTS population growth
I don't mind mine. They keep the sand clean and aerated. If they get too much, I just scoop some out during water changes. Easy peasy.
Re: Managing MTS population growth
Assassin Snails are the way to go. Got three in my 40 breeder, and the MTS population dropped in a month. Just make sure you don't overdo it, or the Assassins will run outta food.
Re: Managing MTS population growth
Anyone tried loaches? My Clown Loaches wiped out my MTS in a week. They're fun to watch too, but they need a bigger tank and buddies to thrive.

I've got a similar setup. Sand substrate, lots of plants. The snails don't bother me much, but I'll try cutting back on food like vyno9 suggested.
Re: Managing MTS population growth
Manual removal's the safest bet if you're worried about chemicals or adding predators. I use a turkey baster to suck 'em out during maintenance.
Re: Managing MTS population growth
Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try reducing food first and maybe grab a couple Assassin Snails if that doesn't cut it.
