Is this play sand aquarium-safe?

Post by rivulet9 »

I just bought some play sand from the hardware store for my 20-gallon tank. It's the fine, light-colored kind. Anyone know if it's safe for my Corydoras and Neon Tetras? I rinsed it a bunch, but wanna double-check before I dump it in.

Play sand can work, but you gotta be careful with the silica content. Some brands have additives or coatings that mess with water params. What's the brand? I've used Quikrete before with no issues, but it took forever to rinse.

It's the generic stuff from Home Depot. No brand name, just labeled 'play sand'. I'll check the bag for silica.

Silica's not the only concern. Some sands leach minerals or alter pH. Test a handful in a bucket of dechlorinated water for a few days, then check pH and hardness. Corydoras need stable conditions, so don't rush it.

Yep, play sand's usually fine if it's pure. I've used it in my 55-gallon for years with no drama. Just rinse it till the water runs clear, like you're already doing. Bonus: it's cheap as heck.

Dude, I tossed play sand in my tank once and it clouded up for days. Total nightmare. Had to rehome my fish while it settled. Maybe try a small batch first?

Cloudiness happens with any new substrate. Just crank up the filter and add some Seachem Clarity. It'll clear in a day or two. My Corys love digging in play sand, way better than gravel.

If you're worried, pool filter sand is a safer bet. It's uniform, pre-washed, and designed not to mess with water chemistry. Costs a bit more, but saves the hassle.

Second this. Pool sand's the way to go if you can swing it. Less rinsing, less stress.

Play sand's inert if it's pure silica, but some brands have dust or clay. That's what clouds the water. Rinse it in small batches with a colander, not just a hose. Takes longer, but works better.
