local fish stocking information

Post by brunobear »

Our tank's a Jewel Vision 450, roughly 100g UK, paired with a 75G sump, so around 50g water volume. It's 5ft long, 2ft high, and 2-2.5ft wide at the front.

We're pretty open to ideas, just need fish that are 100% reef safe and suitable for this tank size when fully grown - no upgrades on the horizon.

Current crew:
- 1 lyretail anthias
- 1 perc clow
- 1 purple firtideflow
- 1 royal gramma

Some fish I've been considering:
- A juv black and white clown to pair with the perc
- Flasher and fairy wrasses - I think multiple wrasses can coexist without too much trouble, but need to dig deeper
- A madarin, but only when I've got a lot more live rock and a solid pod population
- A kole tang
- Yellow tang(s) - apparently you can keep a small group in a big enough tank, but I'm still looking for a clear answer on what 'big enough' means for 2-3 tangs.

Any suggestions for a fish stocking list?

For yellows in a group, I'd say 5 is the minimum, personally. Two or three just isn't gonna cut it - one's gonna end up bullying the other, and I've seen it time and time again. Only person I know who's had success with a group of tangs is, well, me. I've got a 107 US gallon tank with 5 yellows in it, and so far, so good - no aggression problems at all.

Minimum tank size for a group of yellows, I reckon, is 100 US gallons, but the bigger, the better.

As for wrasses, I think I've read somewhere that it's usually the males that fight with each other. Had a bit of an issue with a large yellow streak fairy wrasse male I had - added a six line wrasse and the six line got harassed for a couple of days, but after that, all good. No aggression problems between the two since then. Think adding two wrasses at the same time in your system should work out alright, brunobear.

I've come across some info on keeping multiple fairy and flasher wrasses, and it seems like choosing ones that don't resemble each other can help reduce aggression. Adding them all at once is also recommended, but let's be real, that's not always practical for most of us. From what I've read, it's usually the males that clash, and apparently, fairy wrasses are more prone to this behavior than flashers.

It'd definitely be amazing to see a tank like that, and it's something I'd love to have one day. I'm pretty sure there's a thread on Reef Central that discusses this topic, might be worth checking out.

Considering the tank size and current inhabitants, I'm thinking a small school of either ghost cardinals or chromis could be a great addition. Both are 100% reef safe and can thrive in a tank of this size. However, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Would either of these options work well with the existing fish, or would they be too much for the tank? I'm leaning towards the ghost cardinals, but I've also read great things about chromis.

I'm not too keen on chromis or damsels, so I'd rather avoid those if possible. A school of ghost cardinals, on the other hand, could be really interesting. I've also read that when it comes to mixing wrasses, it's generally okay as long as you choose ones that look quite different from each other.

That's right, they're not the friendliest bunch. My experience with chromis was that they were pretty low on the pecking order, but they were never as aggressive as some damsels I've seen in the past. To be honest, I'd steer clear of damsels altogether if I were you, they can be a real handful.

Apogon leptacanthus, I'm absolutely loving the look of these cardinals - they'd be an amazing addition, but I've got to consider they're nocturnal, still, I bet they'd look stunning under actinics, the way they'd light up would be just incredible.

What about a blond lipstick tang, chevron tang, or Caribbean blue tang?
I think a sailfin tang could be nice, but I've heard they can be a bit tricky.
A yellow watchman goby would be a great addition, and I've also considered a convict blenny.
I've always liked the look of a Leopard Wrasse, and a six line wrasse could work well with it.
I've also thought about a starry blenny, but I've heard they can be a bit territorial.
As for angelfish, I think a Lamarck's Angelfish or Swallowtail Angelfish could be nice, but I've also considered a coflake beauty or Watanabei Angelfish.
A Blackcap Gramma could be a good choice, and I've also looked into a piramid butterfly (if I can find a reef-safe one).
Other options I've thought about include a Purplehead Parrot Wrasse, Multicolor Lubbocks Wrasse, or a Zebradart fish.
I've also considered a scooter blenny or a yellow stripe cardinal.
A regal tang could be nice, but I think they might be a bit too big for my tank.
Lastly, I've also thought about a Kaudern's Cardinal.

My perc clown's getting bullied by the new black and white clown I just added, I'm starting to think about adding a few more to the mix to even things out.

Rixon, might be an idea to start a new thread about the damsel giving your new tang a hard time, see if anyone can offer some advice.
