Why do discus fins look clamped?
Why do discus fins look clamped?
Noticed my discus have clamped fins lately. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrate around 10 ppm. Tank is 75 gallons, temp at 84°F, running a Fluval FX6. They're about 6 months old, fed beef heart mix twice daily. Any ideas what's up?
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Clamped fins can be a stress thing, bro. You got any new tankmates? Sometimes even a sketchy decoration can mess with them. My discus did that when I added a new piece of driftwood.
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Yeah, stress is a big one. Also check your water changes. If you're slacking, the TDS might be creeping up. I do 50% changes twice a week with RO water, keeps 'em happy. What's your WC routine?
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
I agree with luxe! Water changes are key. My discus perked up when I switched to RO. How often do you change the water, picker?
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Mine did that when the temp dropped. Heater was acting up. You sure your heater's reliable? Cheap ones can be a nightmare.
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Could be parasites, man. Mine had clamped fins and it turned out to be gill flukes. Treated with PraziPro and they chilled out. You see any scratching or weird breathing?
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I do 30% changes weekly, but maybe I'll bump it up. Heater's a Eheim Jager, seems solid. No new tankmates or decor. Gonna check for parasites though.
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Yep, weekly might not cut it. Discus are divas, need that clean water. Try upping the changes and see if they loosen up.
Re: Why do discus fins look clamped?
Eheim's a good brand, but still worth double checking. Parasites are a solid guess too. If it's not that, maybe they're just being fussy. Discus can have weird vibes sometimes.
