discus tank decor for shy fish

Post by Mixes »

My Discus are super shy and hide all the time. I've got a 75-gallon tank with sand substrate, driftwood, and some Java Ferns. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Temp's at 84°F with a Fluval heater. Any decor tips to make them feel safer?

Yo, try adding more vertical structures like tall plants or stacked rocks. My crew chilled out after I threw in some Amazon Swords and a couple slate caves. Keep the lighting dim, too. They're skittish under bright lights.

I had the same issue with my group. Switched to floating plants like Frogbit to diffuse the light, and they started coming out more. Also, avoid sudden movements near the tank. They're like little ninjas, spook easy.

Thanks! Gonna grab some slate caves this weekend. How many would you recommend for a 75-gallon?

I'd say two or three caves max, spaced out. Too many and it'll look cluttered. Also, make sure they're big enough for them to turn around in. My dudes love their personal space.

Yep, and if you've got tankmates, keep an eye on aggression. My Angels used to hog the caves till I added more hiding spots.

True that. Discus are peaceable but get stressed if they can't claim a spot. I've got Tetras in mine, no drama. Just avoid fin nippers like Barbs, sketchy vibe for sure.
