Sinularia shedding, should I worry?

Post by rainbolt »

Noticed my Sinularia shedding a bit yesterday. Tank's been stable, 75g, running for 2 years, parameters are 8.1 pH, 1.025 salinity, 0 nitrates. Lighting's AI Prime 16HD, 10 hours daily. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

Sinularia can shed occasionally, especially if they're growing. What's your alk and calcium at? I've seen mine do this when alk swings happen, even if other params look good. Keep an eye on it but don't panic yet.

Mine did the same thing last month. Turned out it was just adjusting to new flow after I tweaked my MP40. How's your flow pattern? If it's not slime or tissue loss, probably just vibing.

Agreed. Alk stability's key. Mine shed when I slacked on dosing for a week. What's your maintenance routine like?

Yo, my Sinularia's been chill but my buddy's tank had the same thing. Turned out his phosphates were whack. You checked those? Dude was running GFO and it cut the shedding in like, a week.

Shedding's usually no big deal if it's minor. But if it's patchy or the base looks sketchy, could be infection. You dosing anything new? I'd skip carbon for a bit if you are, let it recover.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Alk's at 8.5 dKH, calcium 420. Flow's two Nero 3s on opposite ends, 50% power. No new meds, just weekly 10% water changes with Red Sea Coral Pro. I'll check phosphates tonight.

Params sound solid. Could just be a growth phase. If it's not spreading or looking worse in 48 hours, I'd bet it's fine. Maybe bump flow slightly if it's not extending fully.

Second the phosphate check. Even low levels can mess with leathers sometimes. What test kit you using?

Nero 3s are gentle enough. I'd avoid changing flow unless it stays shriveled. Sometimes they just need a day or two to bounce back. Your routine sounds on point, so patience might be the move here.
