recommended books on african cichlids?

Post by flowon »

I'm after a decent book on African cichlids, specifically one that covers all the species from the three lakes. Trouble is, the ones I've found that do this are way out of my budget, £150 or more. Does anyone know of a more affordable option, around £30?

Try Ad Konings' Back to Nature series, it's a good starting point. Cichlid Forum also has a comprehensive profile section that lists pretty much all the species, might be worth checking out.

For a book that's got nearly all cichlids in picture form, both males and females, I'd say go for Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat, New 4th Edition. It's a great identification guide but keep in mind it's a bit light on info.

On the other hand, Back to Nature: Malawi Cichlids by Ad Konings has loads more info, just not as many species covered. Still, it's highly recommended.

If you're looking for some extra bits to complement these, I've got a couple of other recommendations. Lake Malawi Cichlids Aqua Guide and Lake Malawi Cichlids Everything Aquarium are great little extras that usually go for around £2-£5 delivered, used. Just shop around on places like ebay and you'll find them.
