sump design for coral tank
sump design for coral tank
I'm setting up a new 75-gallon tank and wanna get the sump right for my LPS. What's the best layout for a refugium section? I've got a Trigger Systems sump but not sure if I should split the middle chamber or keep it open.
Re: sump design for coral tank
For LPS, you'll want a refugium with chaeto and a slow flow rate. I'd split the middle chamber, leave about 10 inches for the fuge, and run a light on reverse cycle. What's your current flow rate? Also, are you using a protein skimmer in the first chamber?
Re: sump design for coral tank
I agree with earthlyn on the chaeto. I've got a similar setup with a 40-gallon refugium section. Running a Kessil H80 fuge light and it's been great for nutrient control. How often are you planning to harvest the chaeto?
Re: sump design for coral tank
yo, keep it simple. just toss the chaeto in there and let it vibe. no need to overthink the flow, just make sure it's not a dead zone. my lps are chillin' with a basic setup.
Re: sump design for coral tank
I'd go with a split chamber too. Gives you more control over the fuge environment. What kind of substrate are you planning for the refugium? I've had luck with a mix of sand and crushed coral.
Re: sump design for coral tank
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try splitting the middle chamber and see how it goes. I've got a Reef Octopus skimmer in the first chamber and was thinking of using live sand in the fuge.
Re: sump design for coral tank
Spot on. I'd add that you should avoid too much light intensity in the fuge. My chaeto melted when I cranked it up too high.
Re: sump design for coral tank
I've had better luck with a separate refugium tank plumbed into the system. Less mess with the sump design and easier to maintain. Just a thought if you're open to alternatives.

If you're gonna split the chamber, make sure you've got enough space for the skimmer and return pump. Nothing worse than cramming everything in and then fighting with it later. Learned that the hard way.
Re: sump design for coral tank
The sump design should prioritize protein skimmer efficiency. Ensure the first chamber has adequate space for the skimmer to operate without turbulence. This will directly impact nutrient export.
