discus fin damage recovery time
My Discus have some fin damage, likely from a recent scuffle with tankmates. How long does it usually take for them to heal? Water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate, pH 6.8, temp 84F. Tank is 75 gallons, sand substrate, lots of driftwood. They're eating well, mostly beef heart and flakes.

Fin damage can heal in about 2-4 weeks if water quality is pristine. Since your params are good, focus on daily 10% water changes to keep stress low. I'd also add some Indian Almond Leaves for their antibacterial properties. What's your current water change schedule?

Yep, Dream's got it right. I've seen mine bounce back in 3 weeks tops with clean water. You might wanna bump the temp to 86F to speed up their metabolism. Also, check your filter flow, too much current can mess with healing. What kinda filter you running?

Thanks! I'm doing 20% twice a week, but I'll switch to daily. Got some leaves on order.Dream wrote: ↑Sat May 17, 2025 5:45 pm Fin damage can heal in about 2-4 weeks if water quality is pristine. Healing time varies by fish. Younger Discus recover faster, older ones slower. Your tank setup sounds solid, but watch for bullying. If the same fish keeps getting nipped, you might need to rearrange decor or isolate the aggressor. How many tankmates are we talking?

Mine took forever to heal, like 6 weeks, but my water was sketchy at first. Once I got it sorted, they perked up. You got this, just stay on top of those changes. Btw, what's your lighting schedule? Too much light can stress 'em out.

Agreed on lighting. Aim for 8-10 hours max. Also, dimming the lights during recovery can help reduce stress. What's your current photoperiod?

If you're gonna crank the heat, keep an eye on oxygen levels. Higher temps mean less dissolved O2. Maybe add an airstone if you don't have one. What's your surface agitation like?

Solid point. I run a sponge filter alongside my canister for extra surface movement. Dynamo, you might wanna consider that if your filter's too gentle.

Also, don't forget to check your feeding routine. Overfeeding can dirty the water fast, especially with beef heart. How much are you dropping in per feeding?
